Honouring Red Dress Day

May 5, 2025

Today, on Red Dress Day, we pause to honour and remember the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S) across Canada.

The red dress has become a powerful symbol of this national tragedy, representing those who are missing, those we have lost, and the families who continue to search for justice and healing. It is a haunting reminder of the violence Indigenous people, especially women and girls, face at rates far higher than any other group in this country.

The Kamloops & District Labour Council stands in solidarity with Indigenous communities, advocates, and families. We recognize that violence against Indigenous women is not only a crisis of safety, but one rooted in colonialism, systemic racism, poverty, and inaction.

As members of the labour movement, we reaffirm our commitment to reconciliation, equity, and justice. This includes:

  • Demanding full implementation of the National Inquiry’s Calls for Justice
  • Supporting Indigenous-led solutions and services
  • Creating safer, more inclusive workplaces and communities for all

We encourage everyone to wear red, attend local events, and take time to learn about the experiences and demands of Indigenous women and families. Awareness is a beginning — but action is our responsibility.

Let us remember. Let us act.
