Fast Food Breakthrough: Valleyview A&W Workers Unionize and Ratify First Contract

May 8, 2025 – Kamloops, BC
The Kamloops & District Labour Council proudly celebrates a historic milestone in Canadian labour history: workers at the A&W in Valleyview have officially unionized and ratified their first collective agreement — making them the first A&W location in Canada to do so.

A group of 20 fast food workers stood together and succeeded in one of the most difficult sectors to organize. On May 7, they ratified their first collective agreement with an overwhelming 90% approval, setting a precedent for fast food workers across the country.

This agreement secures major gains, including:

  • Better protections for health and safety
  • Stronger job security
  • Respect and dignity in the workplace
  • A greater voice in day-to-day working conditions

Among the most promising aspects of the agreement is the launch of the Pathways Program — a unique partnership between the employer and the union that will fund further education for a select number of employees annually. This initiative shows that collective bargaining can create opportunities for growth far beyond the workplace.

“This is a major moment for Canada’s labour movement,” said Brian Andrews of IBEW Local 993. “These workers are showing that organizing in fast food is not only possible — it’s powerful.”

The Kamloops & District Labour Council commends the courage and unity shown by these workers and encourages others in precarious sectors to consider the strength and protection a union can provide. Their victory is a reminder that no job is too small and no worker too far removed to benefit from collective action.

“This victory is more than just a first contract, it’s a message to every worker in Canada that their voice matters. These young workers in Valleyview are leading a new generation of organizing, and we stand with them every step of the way.”
